I Know Who I Am, and That Is Why I Am Grateful

Our identity as God’s creation is the starting point for a life of gratitude.

EU SEI QUEM SOU, POR ISSO SOU GRATO

The first level of gratitude, in its deepest and most genuine sense, is closely connected to your IDENTITY. This may explain why, when you look around you, and perhaps again when you look at yourself, you find it difficult to see an atmosphere of gratitude.

How is it possible to be grateful for something if your senses, your heart or your thoughts refuse to acknowledge or perceive it?

I always use the story of Pinocchio as an illustration. Created by Geppetto as a wooden puppet, once he has come to life he can, in his insignificance, simply live as though he had never been created.

Ignoring his creator necessarily means eliminating any attitude of gratitude or honour. After all, whom should I thank if I exist entirely in and of myself?

Knowing that I am the creation of a sovereign and supreme God inevitably gives rise to a life of continual gratitude. It is impossible not to be grateful if, and only if, I know who I am, because my identity—who I am—stands right alongside the one who created me, or where I came from.

Receiving a revelation of what is written in Genesis 1:26–28 will be a turning point in your life. He loved creating us, he made us with a purpose, and we are the constant objects of his love. The world is divided between those who know who they are and those who do not. Those who know are like bombs. They give their own lives for the sake of their purpose—they explode—and in doing so set everyone around them ablaze.

“And God created humankind in his image; in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” — Genesis 1:27
