I Know Who God Is, and That Is Why I Am Grateful

Knowing God helps us recognise reasons to give thanks.

EU SEI QUEM DEUS É, POR ISSO SOU GRATO

Imagine you are seven months old. Your mother is talking to a friend in the street outside your home, and you are beside her, asleep in a comfortable pushchair. Your mother is distracted for a moment, the pushchair rolls off the pavement and comes to a stop in the middle of the road. You are sleeping so soundly that you have not even noticed the movement. When your mother realises what has happened, it is already too late: a car is approaching at high speed and you are about to be run over. It all happens very quickly; she has no time to run and save you.

There would have been a tragic ending had it not been for Joãozinho, who was flying a kite in the street. As soon as he heard the approaching car, he ran over and pushed your pushchair onto the pavement. Phew! Joãozinho saved your life—that was close! Your mother, in shock, completely loses the strength in her legs and collapses to the ground, sobbing from the fright.

Twenty years have passed, and you have never heard this story. So let me ask you: Is it possible for you to be grateful to Joãozinho? Of course not! We cannot be grateful for something we do not know about. We cannot express gratitude to a person we do not even know.

This little story offers you at least two conclusions:

The more you know God, the more grateful you will be, because you will inevitably behold the greatness of the Creator. Examine yourself: perhaps the reason you do not live a life of continual gratitude is that you do not know God.

Yet even if you claim this lack of knowledge, you are without excuse, because ever since the creation of the world, God’s invisible attributes, such as his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived and understood through everything he has created.
